Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas
Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas (full name Luis Ignacio María Peñalver y Cárdenas ; born April 3, 1749 in Havana , Cuba ; † July 17, 1810 ibid) was a Cuban Roman Catholic clergyman, first bishop of Louisiana and the Two Floridas (Saint Louis of New Orleans) and Archbishop of Guatemala .
Life
Luis Ignacio Peñalver y Cárdenas came from an elegant and wealthy Havana family, his father Diego Peñalver Calvo was the city's royal treasurer. The young Luis Ignacio attended the Jesuit college Colegio San Ignacio in his native city, before he completed his studies at the Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Jerónimo de La Habana and graduated with a doctorate in theology and canon law.
On April 4, 1772, he received the sacrament of ordination in Havana through Santiago José Echeverría y Elguezúa , the Bishop of Santiago de Cuba . From 1772 to 1787 he carried out pastoral and administrative tasks in the diocese of Santiago de Cuba, from 1773 to 1787 he was its vicar general . When Pope Pius VI. Established the diocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana on September 10, 1787 , Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas continued his pastoral and administrative work there; he was between 1787 and 1793 a. a. Co-visitator of the bishop and again vicar general.
On September 12, 1794 Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas was appointed bishop of April 25, 1793 by Pope Pius VI. newly established Diocese of Louisiana and the Two Floridas (Saint Louis of New Orleans) called. The episcopal ordination donated him on April 26, 1795 Francisco de la Cuerda , Bishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico ; Co- consecrators were Felipe José de Trespalacios y Verdeja , Bishop of San Cristóbal de la Habana, and Cirilo Antonio de Siena (or de Barcelona ), auxiliary bishop in Santiago de Cuba, based in Louisiana . Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas reached Louisiana on July 17, 1795 and formally took possession of the diocese on August 2 of the same year. After being proposed by the Spanish King, he was appointed Archbishop of Guatemala on July 20, 1801, and received the pallium from the Pope on the same day .
On May 9, 1805, Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas resigned from the office of Archbishop because he had contracted a serious infection of the eyes. After his resignation was accepted, he was appointed titular bishop of Tricca and he retired to his hometown Havana in March 1806, where he died in 1810.
