The Archdiocese of Santiago de Guatemala ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Jacobi in Guatemala ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala and Sacatepéquez , based in Guatemala City .

history

The diocese was founded on December 18, 1534 by Pope Paul III. as the diocese of Guatemala (Santiago de Guatemala) ("Guatimalensis (Sancti Jacobi Majoris de Guatemala)") from the diocese of Santo Domingo and was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Seville . With the elevation of the diocese of Mexico to the archbishopric in 1546, the diocese was subordinated to the archbishopric of Mexico . The first bishop was the Spaniard Francisco Marroquín . Pope Benedict XIV elevated the diocese to an archbishopric on December 16, 1743; the first archbishop was Pedro Pardo de Figueroa . In 2013 the name was changed to Santiago de Guatemala.
