The Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán ( Latin Archidioecesis Altensis, Quetzaltenanguensis-Totonicapensis ) is in Guatemala situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Quetzaltenango . It includes the departments of Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán . In Totonicapán is the co- cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel.

history

Pope Benedict XV founded the diocese Quetzaltenango, Los Altos on July 27, 1921 from cessions of territory from the Archdiocese of Guatemala , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan . It lost part of the territory on March 10, 1951 to the dioceses of San Marcos and Sololá .

With the Apostolic Constitution De spirituali Christifidelium , it was elevated to a metropolitan bishopric on February 13, 1996 and took its current name. On December 31 of the same year it lost part of the territory to the Diocese of Suchitepéquez-Retalhuleu .
