Víctor Hugo Martínez Contreras (born March 29, 1930 in San Felipe , Retalhuleu Department , † August 26, 2020 in Guatemala City ) was a Guatemalan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán . He was President of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala from 1986 to 1988 and 1998 to 2002.

Life

Víctor Hugo Martínez Contreras received after his theological training on December 8, 1956 in the cathedral of Huehuetenango by the Bishop of San Marcos , Celestino Miguel Fernández Pérez, OFM , the sacrament of consecration # Presbyterate .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 30, 1970 titular bishop of Naissus and auxiliary bishop in Huehuetenango . He received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Nuncio in Guatemala, Girolamo Prigione , on January 10, 1971; Co- consecrators were Hugo Mark Gerbermann MM , Bishop of Huehuetenango, and José Ramiro Pellecer Samayoa , Auxiliary Bishop in Guatemala .

Paul VI appointed him on September 20, 1975. Bishop of Huehuetenango. Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Quetzaltenango, Los Altos on April 4, 1987. With the elevation to the archbishopric on February 13, 1996 he became Archbishop of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán. Martínez was twice President of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala (1986–1988; 1998–2002). Pope Benedict XVI On April 19, 2007, he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.
