Óscar Julio Vian Morales SDB (born October 18, 1947 in Guatemala City ; † February 24, 2018 ibid) was a Guatemalan religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Santiago de Guatemala .

Life

After secondary school at the Colegio Don Bosco and the Don Bosco seminar in El Salvador , he studied philosophy , theology and education at the theological and philosophical Don Bosco Institute and at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala .

He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1976 by the Archbishop of Managua and brother Miguel Cardinal Obando Bravo SDB in the Shrine of Mary Help in Guatemala City . He then taught at various educational institutions of the Salesians Don Bosco in Central America, including at the Centro Vocacional Salesiano Rinaldi Santa Tecla in El Salvador, at the Colegio Domingo Savio de Cartago in Costa Rica and at the Instituto Técnico Don Bosco in Panama .

He was on leave to study theology of the liturgy at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselm in Rome. On his return to Central America, he was appointed spiritual advisor and director of the Institute of Salesians Centro Juvenil Salesiano (CEJUSA). Shortly afterwards he became director of studies at the Salesian Don Bosco School of Guatemala City and four years later director of the Instituto Salesiano San Miguel of Tegucigalpa in Honduras .

In December 1990 he was appointed director of the Centro Juvenil Don Bosco of Managua in Nicaragua . In 1994 he finally took over the management of the Salesian Don Bosco School in Guatemala City again. He has also taught liturgy and catechesis as well as youth pastoral care at numerous seminars throughout Central America.

After various activities within the religious community in his home province, he took part in the general chapter of the religious community for this province in 1990.

On November 30, 1996 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of El Peten by Pope John Paul II , combined with his ordination as Titular Bishop of Pupiana on February 1, 1997 in Flores again by Cardinal Obando Bravo. In addition to his episcopal work in Petén, between 1997 and 2006 he had various tasks for the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala. He took over the chairmanship of the commission for pastoral care of the liturgy and was a member of the commissions for rural pastoral care, for social pastoral care - Caritas, for youth pastoral care and for pastoral care of education. Finally, he chaired the Comisión de la Pastoral Educativa de Centroamérica y Panamá (COPECO).

On April 19, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán . He took up this office on June 23, 2007. He was followed as Apostolic Vicar by his brother Mario Fiandri SDB, in whose episcopal ordination he participated as a co-consecrator. On October 2, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. as Archbishop of Guatemala City .
