Gonzalo de Villa y Vásquez

Gonzalo de Villa y Vásquez SJ (born April 28, 1954 in Madrid ) is a Spanish religious and appointed Roman Catholic Archbishop of Santiago de Guatemala .

Life

Gonzalo de Villa y Vásquez entered the novitiate of the Jesuits in the Dominican Republic in 1974 . He studied philosophy in Mexico and Nicaragua. After studying theology in Venezuela, the Archbishop of Panama , Marcos Gregorio McGrath CSC , donated him the sacrament of ordination on August 13, 1983 . He made his profession on February 6, 1993 . After further studies, he earned a Masters Degree in Social and Political Thought and a Diploma in Latin American Studies from York University in Toronto .

After his ordination he was a religious teacher at the Ignatius College in Caracas and professor of philosophy at the Universidad Centroamericana in Managua and at the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala City . At Rafael Landívar University, he was dean of the philosophical and political science faculty and rector of the university. He also taught at the National Seminary of Guatemala and was active in pastoral care. Within the order he was superior of various communities and institutions in Guatemala.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Guatemala and titular bishop of Rotaria on July 9, 2004 . The Archbishop of Guatemala , Rodolfo Cardinal Quezada Toruño , donated him episcopal ordination on September 25th of the same year; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Bruno Musarò , Apostolic Nuncio in Guatemala, and Pablo Vizcaíno Prado , Bishop of Suchitepéquez-Retalhuleu .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on July 28, 2007 Bishop of Sololá-Chimaltenango . He was inducted into office on September 22nd of the same year. From October 2, 2010 to September 17, 2011 he was Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán during the Sedis vacancy .

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Santiago de Guatemala on July 9, 2020.
