Mario Enrique Ríos Montt CM (born March 17, 1932 in Huehuetenango , Guatemala ) is a Guatemalan religious and auxiliary bishop emeritus in the Archdiocese of Guatemala .

Life

Mario Enrique Ríos Montt is the brother of the former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt . He joined the Order of the Lazarists and was ordained a priest on July 12, 1959 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 13, 1974. He was appointed Prelate of Escuintla and Titular Bishop of Tiguala . The apostolic nuncio in Guatemala, Archbishop Emanuele Gerada , donated him episcopal ordination on September 27 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of San Miguel , José Eduardo Alvarez Ramírez CM, and Victor Hugo Martínez Contreras , Auxiliary Bishop in Huehuetenango .

On March 3, 1984, Mario Enrique Ríos Montt resigned as prelate of Escuintla.

On January 24, 1987, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Guatemala . From August 14, 1984, Juan Gerardi also served there as auxiliary bishop. After Girardi's murder on April 26, 1998, Mario Enrique Ríos Montt took over his duties in the Oficina de Derechos Humanos del Arzobispado de Guatemala (Human Rights Office of the Archdiocese of Guatemala).

On October 2, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. From July 26, 2011 to February 9, 2013 he was Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate Izabal during the Sedis vacancy .
