José Eduardo Alvarez Ramírez

José Eduardo Alvarez Ramírez CM (born March 22, 1922 in Berlin, Usulután , El Salvador, Central America; † October 10, 2000 in San Salvador ) was the first military bishop of the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador from November 4, 1968 to March 7, 1987 .

He was the son of Maria Rarmirez de Alvarez and Jose Eduardo Alvarez and was survived by his sisters Aida Alvarez Bates in Daly City and Amanda Alvarez Alvarayeros in San Salvador .

Career

He was ordained a priest of the Congregation for Mission on November 4, 1945. On October 7, 1965 he was appointed titular bishop of Tabunia and auxiliary bishop in San Salvador ( El Salvador ) and on January 25, 1966 ordained titular bishop of Tabunia. On November 4, 1968, he was appointed bishop of the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador . On December 9, 1969, he was appointed Bishop of San Miguel, El Salvador .

On March 7, 1987, a few weeks before his 65th birthday, he was ordained bishop of the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador .

Because of the inaction of the Arturo Armando Molina government in investigating the murder of Father Rutilio Grande SJ († March 12, 1977) and two other members of his parish, Oscar Romero stayed away from the celebrations for the inauguration of President Carlos Humberto Romero on July 1, 1977 . José Eduardo Alvarez, however, took part demonstratively and had his sermon of thanks printed in the diocese newspaper:

“Dejando aparte la política ... El obispo Barrera de Santa Ana yo, su obispo de San Miguel y vicario castrense, asistimos a esta ceremonia. - No hay iglesia perseguida. Solo hijos de la Iglesia que ... han perdido el rumbo y están fuera de la ley. ””

“Outside of politics… Bishop Barrera of Santa Ana and I, your Bishop of San Miguel and Military Bishop, attended this magnificent ceremony. - There is no persecuted church. There are only sons of the Church who ... have lost their way and place themselves outside the law. "

On April 10, 1997, he joined 75 years as bishop of San Miguel in El Salvador in retirement .
