Thomas Gerard Wenski (born October 18, 1950 in West Palm Beach , Florida , USA ) is the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Miami .

Life

Thomas Wenski, son of Polish immigrants, was born in West Palm Beach and grew up in Lake Worth. He studied at St. John Vianney Minor Seminary in Westchester and St. Vincent de Paul Major Seminary in Boynton Beach. After his ordination on May 15, 1976, he worked in the predominantly Spanish-speaking parish of Corpus Christi in Miami. After further training at the Pierre Toussaint Haitian Catholic Center ("Notre Dame d'Haiti"), where he learned the customs of Haiti and Haitian Creole , he had an apostolate for Haitian believers, mainly immigrants, at the Saint Mary Cathedral in Miami from 1979 . In 1996 he was appointed director of Catholic Charities Miami , which works in particular with Caritas Cuba. He was also director of the Pierre Toussaint Haitian Catholic Center until 1997. He is fluent in Spanish and Creole .

Pope John Paul II named him Titular Bishop of Kearney and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Miami in 1997 . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Miami John Favalora on September 3, 1997; Co-consecrators were the senior archbishop of Miami Edward A. McCarthy and Agustín Román Rodríguez , auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami. In 2003 he was appointed coadjutor in the diocese of Orlando and followed Norbert Dorsey as diocesan bishop in 2004 .

In 2010 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . fourth Archbishop of Miami.

Thomas Wenski is Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
