John Favalora

John Clement Favalora (born December 5, 1935 in New Orleans ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Miami .

Life

Favalora studied at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict, Louisiana, the Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, and then the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical North America College in Rome . Favalora was ordained a priest in New Orleans on December 20, 1961 . He then worked as a pastor in the Archdiocese of New Orleans for around 25 years .

On June 16, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed Favalora Bishop of Alexandria , Louisiana . He was ordained bishop on July 29th of the same year by the pro-nuncio in the USA and later cardinal Pio Laghi ; Co- consecrators were Philip Hannan , Archbishop of New Orleans, and Bishop William Benedict Friend of Shreveport . On March 14, 1989, Favalora was named Bishop of Saint Petersburg , Florida , and installed in office on May 16 of the same year. On November 3, 1994, Pope John Paul II appointed him third Archbishop of Miami. The inauguration took place on December 20 of the same year.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on April 20, 2010 and appointed Thomas Wenski as his successor.

John Favalora is Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
