James Whitfield (born November 3, 1770 in Liverpool , England , † October 19, 1834 ) was an English clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Baltimore .

Life

James Whitfield received only at the age of 38 years, on 24 July 1809, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Leo XII. appointed him on January 8, 1828 Coadjutor Archbishop of Baltimore and Titular Archbishop of Apollonia . With the death of his predecessor Ambrose Maréchal PSS , he succeeded him as Archbishop of Baltimore just three weeks later. At the same time he became Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Richmond . He received his episcopal ordination from the Bishop of Bardstown , Benedict Joseph Flaget PSS, on May 25 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Philadelphia , Henry Conwell , and the Bishop of New York , John Dubois .

Whitfield convened the first provincial council in 1829 and presided over the second council in 1833. Since Baltimore was the only archdiocese of the United States at the time, these church meetings were of national importance.
