The Upper Peninsula (English Upper Peninsula (of Michigan) ) is the more northerly of the two main land masses which together form the US state of Michigan form. It is also often referred to as the UP (abbreviation of the Upper Peninsula ). The area is bounded by Lake Superior to the north, the St. Marys River to the east, Lakes Michigan and Huron to the south, and the state of Wisconsin to the west.
The Upper Peninsula has about a third of the land area of Michigan, but only three percent of the total population. The residents are often referred to as Yoopers (derived from UP-ers ) and have a distinct regional identity. The only counties in the United States where the largest population is made up of people of Finnish descent are in the Upper Peninsula. The biggest cities are Marquette , Escanaba , Sault Ste. Marie , Menominee and Iron Mountain . The land and climate are not very suitable for agriculture, and the economy is based more on forestry and mining . With the decline of the mining industry since the “golden age” from 1890 to 1920, the regional economy is increasingly based on wood , as the peninsula has vast forest areas.
population
The Upper Peninsula is still a predominantly rural region. Only 106,304 people live in the twelve cities, which have over 4,000 inhabitants and an area of 249.7 km². Only 129,215 people live in the 21 municipalities with at least 2,000 inhabitants. These communities take up only 347.8 km² - less than one percent of the peninsula's area.
