Howard Schultz (born July 19, 1953 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American entrepreneur . Until 2018 he was Chairman (COB) of the Board of Directors at the coffee company Starbucks , which he had decisively developed worldwide.

Life

education

Schultz is the son of a laborer and grew up in a public house in Brooklyn. He was a quarterback for the football team in high school and received a football scholarship from Northern Michigan University . Since he wasn't playing well enough for the college team, he had to take out a student loan. He took courses in marketing, rhetoric and communication and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1975 . This also made him the first academic in his family. He returned to New York and received his sales training at technology and services company Xerox . He then worked in sales and marketing at Xerox for three years. He then moved to Hammarplast, a manufacturer of household appliances, at that time the American subsidiary of the Swedish specialty chemicals group Perstorp AB .

In 1981, Schultz became Head of Sales and Vice President of Hammarplast. He came into contact with Starbucks in Seattle . The company sold fine coffee beans and high-quality coffee machines. After several attempts, the owners of Starbucks hired him in 1982 as manager of marketing and operations, which at the time consisted of only four branches.

From 1983 on, Schultz pursued the idea of ​​offering coffee as a drink. He quit and started his own coffee bar called "Il Giornale", with the support of his previous employers. With the help of investors, he bought Starbucks from the previous owners in 1987. The chain expanded rapidly thereafter. The establishment of the hundredth branch was celebrated in 1991, Starbucks has been listed on the stock exchange since 1992, and expansion abroad began in 1995. In 2000 Schultz withdrew from the operative business and switched to the supervisory board. On June 26, 2018, he left the company after a good 30 years.

"Race Together" campaign in the USA

In March 2015, Schultz initiated the “Race Together” campaign, in which he asked his employees in the 12,000 Starbucks stores in the USA to hold discussions with customers about the problem of racial segregation and racial discrimination in the USA . The campaign temporarily led to a shit storm on Twitter , as a result of which one of the Starbucks press officers temporarily deleted his Twitter account. "Schultz is one of the few bosses who mix social issues with business," wrote the Handelsblatt in an article about the campaign.

2020 presidential election

After speculation about a candidacy in the 2020 presidential election , Schultz announced in January 2019 that he was considering a candidacy. He wants to travel across the States and make a decision within three months. If he is accepted, he will run as an independent candidate. The Democrats warned of the consequences of an independent candidacy, as this might benefit Trump's re-election. In September 2019, Schulz renounced his candidacy because, as an independent candidate, he did not want to favor Trump's re-election.

Private life

Howard Schultz has been married to Sheri Kersch since 1982. They have two children together: a son (born 1986) and a daughter (born 1990). Schultz lives in Seattle.
