Vicksburg is a small town in Kalamazoo County in the southwest of the US state Michigan . In 2000 Vicksburg had 2,320 inhabitants.

Vicksburg has a high school (VHS-Vicksburg High School) and a middle school , plus a few elementary schools . There is a residential area on Indian Lake, one of the slightly larger lakes in the area.

The Village is located east of US Highway 131 almost entirely within the Schoolcraft Township , but a small part extends into the Brady Township .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Vicksburg has an area of ​​4.9 km² , of which 4.7 km² is land and 0.2 km² (= 3.17%) is water.

history

John Vickers, who gave the city its name, settled here in 1831. He built a dam on Portage Creek and a sawmill. This was believed to be the county's first mill and the dam created Sunset Lake around which a number of settlers settled. Vickers died in 1842. Under the name Brady, the village of the state of Michigan was registered as a village on October 18, 1871, but a day later the name was changed by a petition in Vicksburg. A plaque marks the place as a Michigan Registered Historic Site.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Vicksburg had 2,320 people in the city. The population density was 489.5 people per km ². There were 956 housing units at an average of 201.7 per km ². Vicksburg's population was 96.38% White , 0.34% Black or African American , 0.30% Native American , 0.82% Asian , 0.56% said they were racial , and 1.59% said they were racial two or more races. 1.64% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Vicksburg distributed to 908 households out of which 37.9% were living in children under 18 years of age. 48.9% of households were married, 15.4% had a female head of household without a husband and 30.7% were not families. 24.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.4% of all households aged 65 years or older.
