Delta County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Escanaba .

The county is located south of the geographic center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , to the south and southeast , and covers an area of 5,158 square kilometers, of which 2,128 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Menominee County , Marquette County , Alger County , Schoolcraft County and on Lake Michigan on Leelanau County .
history
Delta County was formed in 1843 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after the Greek letter Delta , as the former county boundaries looked like a triangle.

As of the 2000 census , Delta County had 38,520 people in 15,836 households and 10,689 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.83 percent white, 0.09 percent African American, 2.21 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.39 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.49 percent of the population.
Of the 15,836 households, 29.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 32.5 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent were single households and 13.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 35,511 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,079. Males had a median income of $ 37,057 versus $ 22,368 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,667. 7.0 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
