history

Settlement began in 1850 when Indian tribes settled there. Therefore, in 1852 Pastor Peter Daugherty moved an Indian mission from the Old Mission on the Old Mission Peninsula over the western arm of Grand Traverse Bay to what was later called the "New Mission". In the same year a boarding school for children in the Ottawa and Chippewa areas was established. Daugherty built Grove Hill New Mission Church as the nucleus of the new ward. In the summer months there were regular church services. The word “omena”, derived from “O-me-nah”, an Ojibwe expression , means something like “Is that so?” Or “Is that really true?” And was Daugherty's characteristic answer to various statements made by Indians. A post office with this name was built in February 1858. In 1870 the mission collapsed and the boarding school was closed. In the years that followed, the region was shaped by farmers and loggers, but steam shipping in particular revived the region through trade and tourism. As a result, the economy grew and various retail stores were established, such as "Barth's general store" and "Anderson's general store". A house built in the 1880s, which fell into disrepair in the following years, became an ice cream bar in the 1920s and is now the area's post office.

Omena also became a stop on the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in 1903 . Tourism flourished there for decades, until after the Second World War more and more people had a car and the tourists became more mobile and preferred more modern travel destinations.

Benjamin Grierson , a General of the Civil War , had a summer house there and died there.

economy

The most important shops in Omena are the "Tamarack Gallery" (art gallery, formerly the "Anderson's general store"), the "Leelanau winery" with tasting room, the "Knot Just A Bar" restaurant and the "Omena Bay Country Store" (formerly the "Barth's general store"). Other important buildings are the local post office and the museum in the “Putnam-Cloud House”, which is also home to the Omena Historical Society. This building was built in 1876 in the Greek Revival style.

The landscape is characterized by wineries and farms, including large organic farming. Cherries and hops are also grown there. There are several wineries whose grape and cherry harvests are known for the Grand Traverse and Leelanau regions.

The "Omena Traverse Yacht Club" is the center of seasonal social life in Omena. Social gatherings and sailing races take place there. The association also runs a summer camp for children and young people where they can learn tennis and sailing.

Others

Although the municipality does not officially have a mayor's office, the Omena Historical Society organizes a “mayoral election” every three years - in which, however, the local animals symbolically stand for various administrative tasks. In 2018 the cat Sweet Tart McKee was elected mayor of Omena and "inaugurated" on July 21st. She was able to prevail against 13 dogs. McKee previously held offices on the village council and as vice mayor. The range of political tasks is primarily representative. McKee is supported in her office by the two dogs Diablo Shapiro (1st Vice Mayor) and Punkin Anderson-Harder (2nd Vice Mayor). The “term of office” is three years.
