Walker in Kent County

Walker is a city in Kent County in the US state Michigan with 21,842 inhabitants (2000). Prior to the city's founding in 1962, the area was known as Walker Township , which was the second in Kent County to be established in 1837 and originally comprised all of Kent County's land north of the Grand River .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city area is 65.9 km². The urban area is crossed by several larger highways. These are Michigan Highways 11 , 37 and 45 , Interstate 96 and US Highway 131 .

population

At the 2000 census , there were 21,842 people in the city. 94.51% of them were white , the rest was spread over several ethnic groups. The per capita income was $ 21,198, with about 6% of the population living below the poverty line .

history

Samuel and Lydia White were the first to settle in the Walker area from Canada in early 1837 . On December 30 of the same year, Walker Township was established by a Michigan state decree. Over the course of the next 120 years, the township , which originally comprised all of Kent County's land north of the Grand River , became smaller and smaller due to loss of land to the surrounding counties, so that in the early 1960s the citizens voted to found a town. Walker was founded as a city on November 8, 1962.

The city of Walker is run by a city council that consists of seven elected representatives and one employed city manager. The elected mayor only has a representative function and is chairman of the city assemblies. The incumbent mayor is Robert VerHeulen (as of 2009), a lawyer for the Meijer company .

economy

The radio station WZZM 13 is in Walker , the local newspaper is the Grand Rapids Press , whose printing and distribution center is in Walker. The Meijer retail company is headquartered in Walker, as is Bissell Homecare, Inc., originally a carpet cleaning company and now a manufacturer of cleaning equipment and products.
