history

Settlement of the area began in 1833. On May 13th of that year, Sanford Marsh was the first white settler to settle. First the settlement was named by Freeman Bray, from 1840 Hamilton. The naming should honor the President Alexander Hamilton . The area was probably surveyed in 1841, but was not officially registered until May 29, 1851. Bray founded Hamilton as a trading post to the Ojibwa . Furs and hides were traded, as well as calico , lead, jewelry, cutlery and alcohol. The Meridian Charter Township was organized by the legislature in 1842. A sawmill was built in 1842, the first general store in 1853, and a dam to regulate water made further sawmills possible. A grist mill was added in 1856. However, these first works all burned down in 1864 and 1865, respectively. In 1859 the name of Hamilton was changed to Okemos in memory of the Native American chief John Okemos of the Saginaw Chippewa in the Ojibwa nation, a powerful chief who traded with the settlers of the area. He died in 1858. In 1871, Okemos got a train station and was linked to the Michigan Central Railroad , on the line that connected Lansing to Detroit .
