use in the bookbinding

Kaliko (from the port city of Calicut, today Kozhikode , on the Malabar coast in the Indian state of Kerala ) is a fabric that is mainly used in bookbinding as a reference material for bindings and also for removing frescoes .

Manufacturing and history

It is a fully finished cotton fabric that is smoothly calendered or embossed and is partially provided with a handle protection finish. It can easily be mistaken for synthetic leather . Archibald Leigthon first used calico for book covers in England from 1821 onwards . In the course of the 19th century, it developed into one of the most popular cover materials for publishing covers worldwide . From 1836 the Thomas Hughes factory produced calico in England.

Kaliko describes in English-language books about fashion design, cutting techniques and tailoring a simple cotton fabric that is used for the creation of initial samples. In German translations, the term calico is often adopted, but what is meant is nettle , a simple, unbleached, non-chemically finished cotton fabric that is available in various weights.
