John Bailey (musician)

John Bailey (* around 1966 ) is an American modern jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn ) .

Bailey grew up in East Lansing ; He learned to trumpet at an early age (like an older sister), but only persevered thanks to the patience of his teacher (and later conductor) Laurine Celeste Fox. He then took classes with Ira Sullivan for four years . First recordings were made with the McDonald's All American High School Jazz Band ( Coast to Coast , 1984). That year, Down Beat magazine named him in its Student Music Awards for outstanding performance in both the Classical and Jazz Trumpet categories and noted "Shades of Wynton !" In the same year he was a finalist (with Donny McCaslin and Bill Charlap ) in the Arts Recognition and Talent Search of the National Foundation for Advancements in the Arts and won the Youth Talent Contest of the National Association of Jazz Educators .

During his college days he played in the Buddy Rich Big Band and in the following years with Ray Charles , Ray Barretto , Max Weinberg , Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Arturo O'Farrill . He graduated from the Eastman School of Music ; During this time he won the Best Instrumental Soloist Award from Down Beat .

In the following years he played a. a. with Duffy Jackson , Jerry Van & The Big Band of the '90s, with the Barrett Deems Big Band and with Dennis Marks , Silvano Monasterios and Eric Allison. He has also taught at the University of Miami (with their student band on Get a Grip ) and at Florida International University .

From the 1980s Bailey worked in the music scene of New York City in different styles such as traditional jazz, R&B, pop music and also classical music. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 36 recording sessions between 1984 and 2017, including a. with the Gregg August Sextet, Melton Mustafa Orchestra, Tony Kadleck Big Band and the John Fedchock New York Big Band. He also played in the formations Sound Assembly around JC Sanford ( Edge of the Mind , 2005, among others with John Hollenbeck ) and The Aggregation ( Groove's Mood , 2008) and The Ed Palermo Big Band.
