Melton Mustafa

Melton "Rahsaan" Mustafa Senior (born November 23, 1947 ; † December 28, 2017 in Miami ) was an American jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn , arrangement ) and music teacher .

Melton Mustafa, a younger brother of saxophonist Jesse Jones, Jr. , grew up in Miami and studied trumpet in junior high school. As a teenager he played in an R&B / Calypso band that his brother ran. He studied at Berklee College of Music and Mississippi Valley State College; he then earned a degree in music education from Florida A&M University. In the late 1960s, Mustafa worked in backing bands for soul musicians such as Sam & Dave , Betty Wright , Latimore , The Marvelettes and Joe Simon . Eventually he got active on the Miami jazz scene and was led by Ira Sullivan brought into his band.

In the early 1980s Mustafa played in Jaco Pastorius ' Word of Mouth Band ( Invitation , 1981) in Florida , in the following years in New York with Bobby Watson , Randy Bernsen and from 1986 in the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster . in whose recordings with Diane Schuur and Caterina Valente he was involved. He has also worked with the Duke Ellington Orchestra , Woody Herman and His Orchestra , George Cables , John Hicks , Mingus Dynasty and Gunther Schuller .

In 1995 Mustafa recorded the big band album Boiling Point ( Contemporary ) in Florida under his own name , followed by St. Louis Blues (1997). He also played with Eric Allison ( Mean Streets Beat , 1996) and Jesse Jones, Jr. ( Soul Serenade , 1996). One last album ( The Traveling Man ) was made in 2012. Between 1980 and 2012, he was involved in 32 recording sessions in the jazz field.

In later years Mustafa worked primarily as a music teacher in Florida; so he founded the program for jazz studies at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens. An annual Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival was held there from the 1990s , which also served as a fundraiser for college and high school jazz students. There occurred u. a. Jazz greats like Jon Faddis , Benny Golson , Grover Washington Jr. , Wallace Roney , Patrice Rushen , Billy Cobham , Herbie Mann , Billy Taylor , Clark Terry and Randy Brecker . Mustafa died in late 2017 of complications from cancer .
