St. Peter and Paul (Winhöring)

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a Gothic hall church in Winhöring in the Upper Bavarian district of Altötting . It belongs to the parish of St. Peter and Paul Winhöring in the Altötting deanery of the Diocese of Passau .

History and architecture

The three-aisled hall church with a slightly higher central nave and therefore a high roof was built from brick after 1450, probably according to a plan by Jörg Perger. The width of the west wall of the central nave and the west tower have been preserved from the Romanesque predecessor building from the 12th century made of tuff blocks. An interior renovation took place in 2004.

The retracted, two-bay choir ends in a three -eighths ending . The upper part of the tower shows Gothic sound arcades and is closed off by a gable roof with stepped gables. On the south side there is a Romanesque figure of a little man. The sacristy by the choir and the entrance porch are built on to the south. A head from the 12th century is walled in at the southeast corner.

Inside, the central nave is as wide as the choir, and the side aisles are narrower. The west gallery rests on Gothic arched arcades with truss ornamentation. The nave is closed off by net vaults over semicircular services with profiled capitals.

Gothic wall paintings were uncovered on the keystones and between the ribs, partly on the side walls, showing floral ornaments and rectangular fields with tracery shapes. Only a few remains of the frescoes that presumably once covered the entire interior have survived: on the first southern pillar there is a representation of St. Catherine , under the pulpit of an adorant .

Furnishing

The altar sheet of the high altar from the middle of the 18th century dates from 1764 and was perhaps created by Franz Ignaz Oefele according to the monogram . It depicts Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, is flanked by figures of Saints Peter and Paul and, depending on the time of the church year, can be replaced by images with a Lenten cloth , depicting the Holy Sepulcher or the resurrection.

The painting on the north side altar shows Maria, Anna and Joachim and is inscribed with “Joh. Bapt. (Raben) Stainer 1748 ". The side figures of this altar represent the saints Notburga and Magdalena , those of the southern side altar Vitus and Martin and all date from the 18th century. The pulpit from 1748 is connected to a large oratory . The eight-sided baptismal font made of red marble dates from 1485. The sacristy fittings adorned with moving acanthus carvings date from the end of the 17th century.

Surroundings

The vicarage in Winhöring is a castle-like complex southeast of the church. The cemetery chapel is a 15th century complex similar to the chapels in Alzgern and Burgkirchen am Wald . It was built on a rectangular floor plan. The two-bay interior is closed with net rib vaults over services and is oriented north-south.
