Nest Labs Inc. is a Palo Alto- based automation company that became part of Google's hardware division in February 2018 .

Company history

Nest was founded in 2010 by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. The company raised $ 50 million in venture capital before it was founded . Early investors were Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Shasta Ventures . In 2011, Google Ventures also invested in Nest.

The delivery of the thermostats began in autumn 2011. The first batch was sold out within a week. In 2012, Chip Lutton, Apple's former chief patent advisor, joined the company; under his guidance, the patent portfolio was significantly expanded. In April 2012, Honeywell filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Nest .

The second generation of Nest heating controllers has been on the market since October 2012. Nest Labs is one of the partners in the US energy initiative MyEnergi Lifestyle launched by the automaker Ford in 2013 . In January 2014, Nest was acquired by Google Inc. for $ 3.2 billion, making it the second largest acquisition in Google's history after Motorola Mobility . As a result of Google's restructuring, Nest has been part of Alphabet Inc. since August 2015, and in February 2018 Nest was added to Google's hardware department.

With $ 726 million in sales in 2017, the company posted losses of $ 621 million.

The thermostats are adaptive and adapt the room temperature to the outside temperature and to the habits of the residents, lower the temperature sensor-controlled, Wi-Fi -supported and programmable (see also: Home automation ) when there are no people in the house. The programmable room temperature controllers are intended to improve the inefficient 2-point control common in the USA (only 0 or 100% heating or cooling output compared to the continuous control common in other countries). The thermostat learns the habits of its user based on the selected settings.

Nest designed the room thermostats to replace two-point heating thermostats. Because the building mass is usually low in the USA (timber construction), the desired room temperature is regulated by switching the heating / cooling on and off in a timed manner. While the terminal strip was initially designed for connection to the US building technology, the third generation of thermostats supports the global OpenTherm standard and is therefore compatible with newer heating systems in Europe. Nest thermostats are advertised for self-installation. Nest also offers an installation service in countries approved for operating the thermostats. When configuring the heating controller, the postal code must be entered for geographical optimization. It is therefore only advisable to buy Nest thermostats in countries that have been approved by Nest. It is estimated that Nest is currently selling over 40,000 thermostats per month at great growth rates.

Since 2017, Nest has been offering a thermostat, smoke detector and surveillance camera as well as an outdoor version of the camera and a doorbell that can be connected to the Nest Aware online service. The Nest Guard alarm system connects individual devices via additional products or an app. In order to use all functions, you have to rely on the online service. A Guard package with two Detect and two Nest costs $ 499. Nest Detect includes sensors for the Guard system: motion, light and acceleration sensors on the doors or windows should report a break-in. A Nest Detect costs $ 59 each. With an NFC- enabled smartphone or optional Nest Tags ( NFC keychain fobs for $ 25) you can turn the alarm on and off to avoid false alarms.

In February 2019, Google announced that the Google voice assistant would control the Nest security system Secure - via a microphone in Nest Guard. Until then, buyers had not been informed that they were purchasing a microphone with Nest devices. A Google spokesman said, “The microphone in the device was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the technical data. That was a mistake on our part ”.
