Anthony (Tony) Fadell (* 1969 ) is an American computer engineer. He is considered to be the inventor of the concept of the iPod music player with the associated online music store iTunes . He was Senior Director of Apple's iPod, iSight & Special Projects Group.

Tony Fadell is of Lebanese descent. He graduated from the University of Michigan . From 1992 to 1995 he worked for General Magic , where he was most recently a system developer. There he was responsible for various technologies such as MagicLink from Sony or Envoy from Motorola .

In 1995 he was hired by the Philips company, where he was co-inventor, chief technology officer and development director of the Mobile Computing Group , which developed some solutions for the Windows CE operating system . Then Fadell worked as a freelance consultant in the IT sector. Allegedly while on a skiing holiday, he got the idea for the integrated business model that iPod and iTunes are today. The basic concept was to design a portable MP3 player and add a digital retail store with MP3 files to it. Both products would be mutually dependent and thus successively increase the demand for each other.

He presented the concept to several companies including Philips, RealNetworks and Sony . Apple was ultimately interested and made the implementation possible from 2001. The hardware was developed together with PortalPlayer , with an ARM processor and 5 GB hard drive, the operating system was from Pixo. Later all moving parts were replaced and iTunes added as a marketplace.

In 2010, Fadell and Matt Rogers founded Nest Labs , which deals with self-learning and therefore efficient room thermostats. Nest Labs was acquired by Google Inc. for $ 3.2 billion in January 2014 .

In January 2015, Google outsourced the development of the Google Glass data glasses from the Google X research department, handing over responsibility to a separate department headed by Tony Fadell. On June 4, 2016, Fadell's resignation at Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. was announced.
