Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences ) is an Alphabet Inc. research company active in the life sciences . The company had until 10 August 2015 when Sergey Brin announced that the company would be an independent subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., a division of Google X . This restructuring process was completed on October 2, 2015. On December 7, 2015, Google Life Sciences was renamed Verily.

Since July 2014, the research team has included Andrew Conrad , founder of the LabCorp National Genetics Institute; Vik Bajaj, magnetic resonance imaging expert ; Marija Pavlovic, who studies the effects of radiation on DNA ; Alberto Vitari, a cancer biologist; Brian Otis, who worked on Google Venture's glucose-sensitive contact lens ; and Mark DePristo, who worked on the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) at the Broad Institute . Dr. Thomas R. Insel announced on September 15, 2015 that he was stepping down as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to join this department.

Acquisitions and Financing

On September 9, 2014, the Lift Labs division acquired the manufacturer of liftware .

Verily Life Sciences generated $ 1 billion in funding in January 2019. Andy Conrad remained CEO.

Projects

  • Development of comprehensive solutions that combine devices, software, medicine and professional care to enable simple and intelligent disease management for people with diabetes in a partnership with Sanofi .
  • A spoon for people who suffer from tremors .
  • The Baseline Study, a project to collect genetic, molecular, and wearable device information from enough people to get a picture of what a healthy person should be.
  • A health tracking bracelet.
  • A disease- detecting nanoparticle platform that works with the bracelet. A project called Tricorder .
  • Advances in Surgical Robotics, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson .
  • Development and marketing of bioelectronic drugs in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline
  • Development of miniaturized continuously measuring glucose sensors (CGM) in cooperation with Dexcom
  • Contact lenses that enable people with diabetes to measure their blood sugar levels continuously and without impairment. On November 16, 2018, Verily announced that she had discontinued this project.
