history

In September 1998, Cyberport was as GmbH under the company Cyberport GmbH into the commercial register on this day. The company initially focused on selling Apple computers over the Internet. Cyberport saw rapid sales growth and expanded its range to other brands. In 1999 the company started manufacturing PCs and presented the first computer manufactured exclusively in Saxony to the public . Cyberport also pushed the sale of individually configured PCs. In addition to the Windows operating system, Red Hat certified its Linux distribution for the computers of the Dresden company. Cyberport generated millions in sales in its first business year, making the company a prime example of the Saxon IT industry. Due to the continued success, Hubert Burda Media joined the company in 1999 . Initially, 15% of the shares were bought, and in 2000 the media group then took over the majority.

Before Hubert Burda Media joined, an IPO of Cyberport was under discussion, but this did not materialize because the dot-com bubble burst . Although one of the founders left the company in 2001, Cyberport continued to grow against the industry trend. In 2003, sales exceeded the 50 million euro mark for the first time. Cyberport expanded its activities at its headquarters in Dresden, where the company continuously hired new employees. Among other things, investments were made in the quality of customer service. In addition, the first branch was opened at the headquarters in Dresden in 2003. Cyberport later expanded to Berlin and other locations, for example. The company became an important pillar of Hubert Burda Media's digital business. After Cyberport had expanded its range to include household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, the company also built a completely new logistics center in Siebenlehn .

In 2008, ten years after the company was founded, Cyberport achieved sales of 182 million euros. In 2009 the company opened its largest branch to date in Leipzig. In addition to the German market, Cyberport expanded to Austria. The first branch was opened at Vienna's Westbahnhof . At times Cyberport was also under discussion as an investor for the insolvent Austrian electronics chain Niedermeyer. The positive development of the company continued, by 2012 sales had increased to over half a billion euros. In order to maintain the growth rates, Cyberport received new management in 2013 . Furthermore, the expansion of the branch network was accelerated, which was understood in particular as an attack on the Media-Saturn-Holding . In 2016 the company had a total of 14 locations in Germany and Austria.

In 2017, Hubert Burda Media bought the remaining shares in Cyberport and thus became the company's sole shareholder. Cyberport, in turn, took over the e-commerce company HQ Patronen , which specializes in the distribution of toner , ink and office supplies.
