Michael Tye
Michael Tye (* 1950 ) is a philosopher and professor at the University of Texas at Austin . His work focuses on the philosophy of mind and the fundamental debate in cognitive science .
Tye advocates a materialistic theory of mind that is systematically v. a. based on the concept of representation . Also Qualia , the subjective experience levels of consciousness are, can be explained as part of a representational theory.
Tye has also made an important contribution to the imagery debate in cognitive science. This dispute revolves around the question of how pictorial representation should be interpreted scientifically. While proponents of the classic cognitivist approach (especially Zenon Pylyshyn ) advocate a propositional theory, Stephen Kosslyn explains that visual perception is very similar to direct visual perception . Tye tries to mediate between these positions.
