Stephen Kosslyn

Stephen Michael Kosslyn (born November 30, 1948 ) is an American psychologist . He made important contributions to the understanding of visual perception and cognition . Kosslyn was one of the protagonists of the figurative controversy , for which he developed a comprehensive theory, as well as for its representation in human memory .

Kosslyn earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a PhD from Stanford University in 1974 , both in psychology. Initially he was an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University . From 1977 he was a professor at Harvard University before moving to the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University in 2011 .

As of 2017, Kosslyn is the founding dean of Minerva Schools , an institution of the Keck Graduate Institute , which in turn is part of Claremont Colleges in Claremont , California .

Kosslyn was awarded the National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research in 1983 and the Jean-Louis Signoret Prize in 1995 . He has been an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1995 and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2004 . Kosslyn received honorary doctorates from the University of Caen and the University of Paris Descartes .

His students include Natalie Hershlag and Steven Pinker .
