Bushbuckridge ( Afrikaans : Bosbokrand ) is a city in the Mpumalanga Province in northeastern South Africa . The name stands for Bushbuck (dt .: " bushbuck ") and ridge (dt .: "Red Line"), and was given to the place because of the large herds of antelope that were found there at the time of inception. The city grew around a trading post that had been established there in 1884. Tobacco , cotton and vegetable cultivation have developed in the surrounding area.

Today the city has a size of 73 km² and 2,109 inhabitants (status: 2011).

The residents of the city and the surrounding area quarreled with the provincial government of Limpopo because they felt more connected to the province of Mpumalanga with the nearby capital Mbombela than to their then Limpopo province . In 2006 the city became part of Mpumalanga.
