Thomas Gebhart (born December 20, 1971 in Kandel ) is a German CDU politician . Since 2009 he has been a member of the German Bundestag for the constituency of Southern Palatinate and since March 2018 Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Health .

Life

After graduating from the Europa-Gymnasium Wörth in 1991, Gebhart did his community service in the St. Vincentius Hospital in Karlsruhe. In 1992 he began studying business administration and political science in Mannheim and Birmingham and received his doctorate in 2002 with a thesis on direct democracy. rer. pole. In 1989 Gebhart joined the Junge Union , in 1996 he became a member of the CDU. In 1999 he became a member of the Germersheim district council , and in 2002 chairman of the CDU district association in Germersheim. From 2003 to 2009 Gebhart was a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament and the Upper Rhine Council. He was directly elected member of the Germersheim constituency and from 2006 to 2009 environmental policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament. In November 2007 he was elected deputy chairman of the CDU district association Rheinhessen-Pfalz.

In the 2009 federal election he won constituency 212 Südpfalz with 40.7%, 2013 with 48.8% and 2017 with 40.3% of the vote. Until his appointment as Parliamentary State Secretary, the directly elected MP was a full member of the Committee for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety and a deputy member of the Budget Committee and secretary.

As a rapporteur for the Union parliamentary group in the German Bundestag for circular economy and resource efficiency , Gebhart was involved in the creation of the Packaging Act , which strengthens product stewardship and increases recycling rates. Gebhart also advocated a voluntary commitment by German retailers that plastic bags should no longer be given away free of charge. This was signed in April 2016. As a result, German consumption of plastic bags fell significantly.

Gebhart is a member of the German-British and German-French parliamentary groups as well as the "Parliamentary Friends of Berlin-Taipei". He is a member of the non-partisan European Union Germany , which advocates a federal Europe and the European unification process.

On March 15, 2018, Gebhart was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Health .
