Michael S. Hart started Project Gutenberg , an internet library of free electronic versions of physically existing books ( retro-digitized books ), also known as e-texts . The project takes its name from the German printer Johannes Gutenberg , who invented letterpress printing with movable type in Europe in the 15th century.
- Heinrich Böll is elected President of the International Writers' Union ( PEN ) for four years .
- February 26th : The Swiss book collector Martin Bodmer creates the literary museum Bibliotheca Bodmeriana in Cologny with a deed of foundation .
- Queen Elizabeth II awards Agatha Christie the title of Lady of the British Empire .
Libraries
The Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche (LIBER) is founded under the auspices of the Council of Europe . Members are European national and university libraries. LIBER is a member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions .
