John Wray (writer)
John Wray (born 1971 in Washington, DC ) is the pseudonym of John Henderson, an American-Austrian writer.
Life
Henderson grew up as the son of an American oncologist and an Austrian oncologist who emigrated in the 1960s in Buffalo and began studying biology at Oberlin College . He broke this off, lived off odd jobs and also made rock music in a band.
Wray received a 2007 Granta Prize for his short story In the Tunnel . For the novel The Right Hand of Sleep, on which he had worked for seven years, he received the Whiting Award for young talent in 2001 . While doing research for the novel Canaan's Tongue, which contains material from Mark Twain's life on the Mississippi , he rode a raft 600 miles on the Mississippi River in 2005 ; for this novel he was nominated for the Believer Book Award . In 2010 Wray was a fellow at the American Academy in Berlin .
Wray temporarily stays with relatives on his mother's side in Friesach ( Carinthia , Austria). He lives in a self- renovated brownstone house in Brooklyn and has rented a number of writing rooms to writers, including, Stand 2019, Marlon James , Nathan Englander , Alice Sola Kim and the children's author Isaac Fitzgerald .
In 2017 he was awarded the Deutschlandfunk Prize at the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition for a text excerpt from Madrigal .
