Shari Villarosa (née Sharon Woods ) is an American diplomat .

Career

Villarosa comes from the family of a US soldier, so she lived in various places abroad from an early age. At the age of six months she moved to Germany with her parents so that she could speak German instead of English at first. Villarosa received a degree in international studies from the University of North Carolina (1970–1972) in Chapel Hill . She graduated from the College of William & Mary (1976-1988) with a law degree .

She worked for the US Foreign Service in various posts abroad, including in Songkhla ( Thailand ), Brasilia , Quito and Bogota . At the United States Department of State in Washington, DC , Villarosa served as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs , Deputy Director of the Office for Myanmar , Cambodia , Laos , Thailand and Vietnam , Desk Officer for Singapore and Indonesia and in the Office of Investment Affairs . She spent a year at the East-West Center in Honolulu as a diplomat-in-residence .

From May 20, 2002 to December 10, 2002 she was Chargé d'Affaires at the United States Embassy in East Timor, which has just become independent . Subsequently, Villarosa was economic advisor at the embassy in Jakarta , director for affairs concerning the Philippines , Malaysia , Brunei and Singapore in the East Asia and Pacific Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from August 31, 2005 to August 2008 ambassador to Myanmar.

Villarosa served as Deputy Coordinator for Regional Affairs in the State Department's Bureau of Counterterrorism from September 2008 until she was confirmed as United States Ambassador to Mauritius and the Seychelles by the Senate in September 2012 .
