Life

Common grave of the brothers Rafał and Andrzej Wojaczek

Wojaczek was born into a family that is well known and valued in the city. His father was a high school teacher, his mother worked in a publishing house. He attended several high schools in Mikołów, Katowice - Ligota and Kędzierzyn-Koźle . After graduating from high school , he studied Polish studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow , but broke off his studies after a short time and moved to Wroclaw in 1964, where he tried several jobs, including working in municipal garbage disposal. During his time in Wroclaw he led an excessive life and was considered a unworldly egomaniacand suffered from self-destructive mania. This led to alcoholism and several suicide attempts . In 1971 he died after taking a drug cocktail.

Wojaczek belonged to the same generation of poets as Edward Stachura and Andrzej Bursa and is considered one of the “young savages” of Polish poetry of the 1960s. As a poet he made his debut in 1965 in the magazine "Poezja" (German poetry ). In 1969 his debut collection of poems "Sezon" (German season ) was published, which received very good reviews; In 1970 he published his second volume of poetry: "Inna bajka" (Eng. The other fairy tale ). After his death in 1971 other poetic works appeared. Wojaczek's poetry can be assigned to turpism , as it increasingly contains motifs of alienation and isolation as well as drastic depictions of death, mixed with vocabulary with a hint of eroticism, gloomy visions and sarcasm. Wojaczek was posthumously awarded the Andrzej Bursa Prize.

In 1999 the Polish director Lech Majewski made an experimental film about Wojaczek's life, which was shown in the International Forum of the Berlinale 2000.

Rafał Wojaczek's younger brother Andrzej (1947–2000) gained fame as an actor.
