Coberger achieved the greatest success of her career at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , when she surprisingly won the silver medal in the slalom behind Austrian Petra Kronberger , where she secured the medal from 8th place on February 20, 1992 in the Stade du Corbey . This makes her the first female athlete from New Zealand to win a medal at the Winter Olympics.
It did not begin to compete in World Cup races until the 1991/92 Olympic season . In the four World Cup slaloms before the start of the Olympic Games, she reached her top form and advanced to the top of the world. Her first place in the points was achieved on December 1, 1991 with 13th place in the second slalom in Lech . Already on January 12, 1992, she finished third in Schruns for the first time on the podium (here after 14th place in the first run). On January 14, 1992, she achieved her first and only World Cup victory in Hinterstoder . 4th place in Maribor on January 18th , followed by 3rd place in Grindelwald on February 2nd.
She was able to confirm her performance in the following season with a third and three second places. There was a disappointment for them at the 1993 World Championships in Morioka-Shizukuishi . As the leader after the first run, she made a goal error in the second run just before the finish, whereupon she was disqualified. At the end of the season she finished second in the Slalom World Cup, just six points behind Vreni Schneider . In addition, she managed a surprising third place in the giant slalom in Lillehammer (March 20).
After that, her form curve pointed downwards and she no longer appeared in the front seats. 5th place in the slalom of Sestrière on December 18, 1994 was her best result. Coberger's last World Cup race was in slalom on March 19, 1995 in the season finale in Bormio , where she finished 16th.
