Patrick Wirbeleit

Patrick Wirbeleit (born October 31, 1971 in Lüneburg ) is a German illustrator , comic book author and draftsman.

life and work

Wirbeleit grew up in Ruschwedel and completed an apprenticeship as a retail salesman , he broke off a subsequent apprenticeship as an interior decorator . Wirbeleit has been a freelance artist since 1995 and an illustrator and comic artist since 2001.

In 2004 Wirbeleit illustrated his first Pixi book . Since then, he has created more than 60 illustrated or written books for children. 17 “Pixi books” alone.

In collaboration with the illustrator Kim Schmidt , he created the comic Störtebeker , published by Carlsen Verlag in 2004, and the comics Kleiner Thor , published by Tokyopop in 2007 and 2008 . Together with the comic artist Volker Sponholz , Wirbeleit was editor of the Herrimans comicedition . In 2002 he received the ICOM special award for the comic book Das Baumhaus published by Herrimans . In addition, Wirbeleit illustrated the culture column for the business newspaper Brand eins for over six years . In 2016, Patrick Wirbeleit and Uwe Heidschötter received the Max and Moritz Prize in the category “Best Comic for Children” for the Comic Kiste at the 17th Comic Salon in Erlangen , but let it be read that he would not accept the award.

In 2010 Patrick Wirbeleit initiated the “primeval robot”. The prize for the funniest children's book of the year. However, he finished work on it in 2013 in order to establish the Carl Buch Prize in 2015. This is awarded annually as part of the Seiteneinsteiger Reading Festival for the best children's book cover illustration. The prize is endowed with 2000 euros. The prize is donated by Carl Buch Elektrotechnik Hamburg.

Wirbeleit is the father of two children and lives with his family in a village near Buxtehude.
