Valentin Baur

Valentin Baur (born December 19, 1891 in Augsburg ; † June 25, 1971 there ) was a German politician of the SPD .

Life and work

After attending the elementary school and then the vocational training school, Baur trained as a building fitter , and in 1909 he became a member of the German Metalworkers' Association , the forerunner of IG Metall . From 1912 to 1918 he was a soldier, on November 12, 1918 he was elected chairman of the workers 'and soldiers' council in Augsburg. From 1919 onwards, Baur initially worked for the Riedinger company, which was merged with MAN AG in 1927 . From 1923 to 1933 he was chairman of the works council , first at Riedinger then at MAN. In the Weimar Republic he was also the second chairman of the metal workers' association in Augsburg. At the national level, he was a member of the main board of the metalworkers' association and the national advisory board of the corporate works councils. In addition, he was a board member of the state insurance company in Swabia and the disability insurance. After 1933, he was removed from this post for political reasons and taken into "protective custody". After his release, he first emigrated to the Saar region , after which he returned to the German Empire, to Switzerland and later to Liechtenstein . From there he participated in the resistance against the Nazi regime. In connection with these activities, he was expatriated by the National Socialist authorities in 1944 .

After his return in 1945, Baur was appointed head of the housing office in Augsburg by the American occupation forces. From 1945 to 1958 he was the local chairman of ÖTV today ver.di in Augsburg.

Political party

Baur had been a member of the SPD since 1911. In 1946 he became district chairman of his party in Swabia and was a member of the party executive from 1946 to 1949.

Baur was elected to the Augsburg city ​​council in 1924 .

From December 1946 to June 1947 Baur was a member of the state parliament in Bavaria . From 1947 to 1949 Baur was a member of the Economic Council. From 1949 to 1961 he was a member of the German Bundestag . He represented the constituency of Augsburg in the Bundestag.
