Matthias Bäcker (musician)

Matthias Bäcker (* 1971 in Schwerin ) is a German oboist and university professor.

Matthias Bäcker received music lessons at the “Johann Wilhelm Hertel” Conservatory in Schwerin and studied with Hans Werner Wätzig at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin and with Burkhard Glaetzner at the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music and Theater in Leipzig . In 1994 he was accepted as a young musician in the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and was tutored by Hansjörg Schellenberger . He also played in the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and was a founding member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in 1997 . He had permanent engagements as principal oboist with the Berliner Symphoniker , at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and from 1999 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin .

Matthias Bäcker played with well-known orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Opera , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Camerata Salzburg . As a soloist and chamber musician, he has made guest appearances in Germany and abroad. In a duet with the pianist Birgitta Wollenweber he plays works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , Benjamin Britten , Robert Schumann , Georg Philipp Telemann , Johannes Brahms , Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda and by Florent Schmitt .

Matthias Bäcker has been professor of oboe at the Liszt School of Music Weimar since 2005 . He is a member of the university's senate .
