Suheir Atassi ( Arabic سهير الأتاسي, DMG Suhair al-Atāsī ; * 1971 in Damascus ), also Souheïr Atassi , is a Syrian lawyer, dissident and chairwoman of the opposition Assistance Coordination Unit (ACU) based in Turkey .

Atassi was born in Damascus in 1971 into the prominent Atassi family from Homs . She studied French literature and education at Damascus University . From 2000 she was active in the Damascus Spring , where she headed the media wing of the banned Jamal al-Atassi forum , which was named after her father - a founding member of the Ba'ath Party . It revived the online forum co-founded by Ali al-Atassi in 2009 to promote the situation of democracy and human rights in Syria. She was arrested on March 16, 2011 after participating in demonstrations critical of the regime and was detained for several months.

She was elected vice president of the opposition coalition in November 2012 . On March 26, 2013, she became the first woman to chair a meeting of the Arab League after the Syrian seat had been assigned to the Syrian National Coalition and the actual head of the delegation, Moas al-Khatib, was temporarily absent. She resigned in December 2013.
