Ali al-Atassi

Mohammad Ali al-Atassi ( Arabic محمد علي الأتاسي, DMG Muḥammad ʿAlī al-Atāssī ; * 1967 ) is a Syrian journalist and civil rights activist . Among other things, he writes for the cultural supplement of the Lebanese daily newspaper an-Nahar and works as a film producer.

Life

Ali al-Atassi was born into the influential and politically active Syrian landowning family Atassi from Homs , who also came into possession, power and influence in Damascus in the 20th century . He is the son of the former Baathist President Nureddin al-Atassi .

After completing his training and spending eight years in France , Ali al-Atassi returned to his Syrian homeland in 1999. He became known for his commitment to human rights and his documentary about the long-term imprisoned Syrian dissident Riad al Türk .

As an avowed critic of the Ba'ath regime, he and Suheir Atassi (the daughter of Jamal al-Atassi ) launched an internet forum critical of the government after the last political salon in Syria, the so-called Atassi Forum , in May 2005 by the Government was banned. Oppositionists from various political currents met in this salon to discuss.

The 2014 film Baladna Alraheeb (Our Terrible Country) by the Syrian filmmaker Ali al-Atassi describes the flight of the Syrian dissident Yassin al-Haj Saleh from Syria to Turkey and provides insights into different lines of conflict within the Syrian civil war.

Ali al-Atassi lives and works in Beirut .
