Life

Abel was born the son of a Viennese court attorney. He belonged to the Jewish denomination. After passing the final examination , he devoted himself to the study of law at the University of Vienna , where he on 18 January 1899 finally, sub auspiciis imperatoris , to Dr. iur. received his doctorate . After his subsequent legal practice, he worked as a clerk in the office of the Viennese lawyer Dr. Brunstein active. As a result he was appointed partner in the Vienna law firm of his father-in-law Adolf Bachrach ; as such, he was appointed court and court advocate in 1904. In 1938 Abel was forced to emigrate to London; From then on he worked there as a consultant for international law, for example in the preparation of Central European patent and copyright law. After the end of the war he did not return to Austria. On May 10, 1971, he died in London after a short, serious illness at the old age of 97.

Paul Abel's main interest was copyright and patent law . His first major work - on the legal community in patent law - appeared in 1903 during his internship; Abel's system of Austrian trademark law , published in 1908, proved to be particularly scientifically significant . Abel was also instrumental in drafting the relevant Austrian laws, for example in the trademark amendments of 1928 and 1934 and (under Karl Lißbauer as the responsible clerk in the Ministry of Justice) in the copyright reform of 1936. The Austrian Association for Commercial Legal Protection and Copyright appointed Abel an honorary member .
