Oscar Camenzind (1997)

Oscar "Ösi" Camenzind (* 12. September 1971 in Gersau , Canton of Schwyz ) is a former Swiss professional - cyclist .

Career

Camenzind turned pro in 1996, but had already won individual road races, such as the Hegiberg Tour in Winterthur twice in 1994 and 1995 . In 1997 he won the Grand Prix Tell stage race , finished the Tour de Suisse in second place and became Swiss cycling road champion.

His most successful year was 1998: he finished fourth overall at the Giro d'Italia and won the road cycling world championship in Valkenburg, the Netherlands. A few days later, the Swiss also won the Lombardy Tour . Because of these successes, he was also voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year .

In 2000 he won the Tour de Suisse by 14 seconds over the Italian Dario Frigo . In 2001 Camenzind won the classic Liège – Bastogne – Liège , one of the five monuments of cycling .

On July 22, 2004, Camenzind tested positive for EPO in a doping control . He then decided not to take part in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , was released from his cycling team Phonak Cycling Team on August 9, 2004 and announced his retirement on August 10, 2004 in Lucerne . He was banned from Swiss Olympic for two years.
