Eino Saari

Eino Armas Saari (born October 7, 1894 in Turku , † April 13, 1971 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish forest scientist . The forest politician and forest economist was internationally known through his activities, for example within the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) .

Life

Eino Saari was in 1922 at the University of Helsinki with the dissertation Kotitarvepuun kulutus maaseudulla Turun yes porni läänissa that wood consumption for domestic use in rural areas in the district of Åbo-Björneborg treated for Dr. phil. PhD . From 1925 to 1963 he taught and researched as Professor of Forest Policy at the University of Helsinki. In addition to questions of forest policy and forest business administration , he has presented important papers on the wood market, wood prices, wood consumption and wood supply in Finland. In doing so, he also provided the essential basis for international wood market research. Most of his studies he published in the internationally renowned Series Acta forestalia Fennica .

Through his great involvement in international scientific organizations, Eino Saari played a decisive role in determining the guidelines for the development of international forest science. He worked in the International Association of Forest Research Institutes (IUFRO) , where he was chairman of the Joint Committee, or in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as their advisor and chairman for bibliography and classification . From 1948 to 1968 he was also chairman of the Finnish national FAO committee and chairman of the European Forestry Commission of the World Food Organization. He also worked as a forest policy advisor to the FAO in Paraguay, among others . In 1949 he was President of the III. World Forest Congress.

Beyond the narrow forestry sphere of activity, Professor Saari was also active as a politician in his home country . From 1951 to 1958 he was chairman of the liberal splinter party People's Party of Finland (KP). He was also Minister of Social Affairs in the Fagerholm II cabinet between March 1956 and May 1957.

His scientific achievements were recognized, among other things, by being awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) by the Georg-August University of Göttingen .

Professor em. Dr. phil. Dr. hc Eino Saari died on April 13, 1971 at the age of 77.
