Dirk Ahrens

Dirk Ahrens (* 1971 in Neubrandenburg ) is a German biologist and taxonomist at the Museum Alexander Koenig , Bonn. He specializes in scarab beetles and has been the new custodian of the Coleoptera section since May 1st, 2010 .

Life

Ahrens studied biology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald with a focus on zoology and ecology. He graduated with a diploma in 1997 and worked as a research assistant at the State Animal Museum in Dresden. From 2001 to 2004 he did his doctorate at the German Entomological Institute, Eberswalde and received his title from the Free University of Berlin . In 2005 he worked for the Swiss development cooperation agency Helvetas . From 2006 to 2008 he was a post-doctoral student at the Natural History Museum in Munich, before moving to the Zoological Research Museum Koenig in Bonn in 2010.

His research area includes the molecular systematics of beetles, as well as evolutionary biology and integrative taxonomy. So far, he has described nearly 500 new species in scientific publications.
