Stephen Yip

Stephen Yip , or Yip Shu-kin ( Chinese  葉樹堅  /  叶树坚 , Pinyin Yè Shùjiān , Jyutping Jip 6 Syu 6 gin 1 , * 1971 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese - American composer and organist . He lives in Houston .

Life

Yip studied with Young Shui-ting and Ip Shun-chi at the United Academy of Music in Hong Kong in 1989 . From 1991 to 1996 he studied composition and electronic music with Law Wing-fai and Clarence Mak and conducting with Yip Wing-sie at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts . In 1995 he was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. He finished his studies with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Hong Kong. He then obtained a Master of Music (1998) and a Doctor of Musical Arts (2001) from Rice University in Houston. His composition teachers included Ellsworth Milburn , Arthur Gottschalk , Pierre Jalbert , Samuel Jones , George Burt, and Richard Lavenda . He also attended the Darmstadt summer courses .

From 1998 to 2005 he worked as an organist at various Catholic and Presbyterian churches in the USA. Since 2006 he has been the music director for the musical composition of the liturgy at St. Albert of Trapani Catholic Church in Houston and since 2001 a board member of the Houston Culture Council. Since 2006 he has been composer in residence at various cultural institutions in Florida, Arizona, Nebraska, Virginia and New York.

His compositions have been included in the program of international music festivals, such as the ISCM World Music Days in Zagreb and the Musicarama in Hong Kong. They have been performed in Costa Rica , Israel , Canada , China , Croatia , Luxembourg , South Korea , the Czech Republic , Austria , the United States and the Philippines . Performers were u. a. the Luxembourg Sinfonietta , the North / South Consonance Ensemble , the California EAR Unit and the Ensemble Sortisatio .

Yip is a member of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild , the College Music Society , the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and the National Association of Composers .

He has been with the Houston Community College System since 2006 .
