Arthur Gottschalk

Arthur Wiliam Gottschalk (born March 14, 1952 in San Diego , California ) is an American composer .

Life

Gottschalk grew up in the northeastern United States. He first studied medicine , but then switched to English literature and composition at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In 1978 he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition. His teachers included u. a. William Bolcom , Ross Lee Finney , George Balch Wilson and Leslie Bassett .

He is currently Professor of Composition at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music . From 1997 to 2010 he was dean of the local faculty for music theory and composition. There he headed the laboratory for electronic and computer music until 2002. In 1986 he founded Modern Music Ventures . He composed more than 100 works, including several film scores . He was composer in residence at Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center at Columbia University and at the Spoleto Festival USA.
