The Naxos Music Library (NML) is an international music streaming web portal for listening to classical music from Naxos . It is an online music archive specially tailored to the needs of classical music listeners. In addition to listening to works and individual sentences, users have the option of viewing a lot of additional information. The online audio library can be used free of advertising for a fee, with either a monthly or annual subscription. According to its own information, the Naxos Music Library is the world's largest music streaming web portal for classical music.

The recordings come from the catalog of the Naxos label and over 320 other independent labels. The total repertoire contains over 10,000 works, including standard works of classical music as well as rarities, niche works and contemporary compositions. 1,000 years of music history can be traced here. In total, over 1,929,000 tracks from over 126,090 CDs are available to listeners.

history

Naxos founder Klaus Heymann discovered the possibilities of the Internet for Naxos as early as 1996 and made the entire Naxos catalog available in digital form, independently of a sound carrier. However, the service was not intended for subscribing, but was intended to provide the listener with an initial sound impression so that they could buy a sound carrier if necessary. At that time, fast interconnections were largely a dream of the future, so that the stream was limited to 20  kbps and the sound quality was accordingly poor.

In 2003 the company started with a 250 gigabyte hard drive with a content of 6,000 hours from the areas of music and audio books. This was the "Music and Spoken Word Library".

However, due to its limited storage space, the hard drive did not have the prospect of lasting success. Starting in 2004, this concept was gradually replaced by the Naxos Music Library web portal.

Little by little, other labels independent of Naxos were added, and they are still offering their recordings there today. Including classic labels such as Hänssler Classic , BIS , Hungaroton , BR-Klassik, Solo Musica, Capriccio, Opus 111 and Tudor, well-known in German-speaking countries . The Naxos catalog is estimated to contain around 6,000 to 7,000 CDs. The label of the founder of this platform currently accounts for only about 10% of the total offer of the Naxos Music Library.

At the end of 2019, the provider launched a new version, "NML3", with a new layout and new functions.

repertoire

The web portal mainly contains classical music . Jazz, folk, blues, world music, pop, rock, Chinese music, gospel, relaxation music and audio books are also among the genres that can be found. The offer is constantly being expanded. This is indicated by the daily counter in the top right corner of the web portal and the mention of new labels in the “News” section.

Customer groups

The main interested parties are educational institutions such as universities, music schools, libraries, general education schools, orchestras, concert halls and radio stations. Private individuals can also subscribe to the service. You can register online with a "money-back guarantee" using the subscription form or offline via the representatives in the respective countries.

Cost and sound quality

The music flat rate of the Naxos Music Library is only chargeable and does not require advertising. The user can choose between two audio streams. The provider speaks of sound quality standard with a bit rate of 128 kbps and sound quality premium with 320 kbps. The streaming format is the AAC format.
