Woomera

Woomera is a city in the Australian state of South Australia . Until 1982 the place was in the military area Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA, also Woomera Sperrgebiet ) and could only be reached with permission. In the 1960s, before the establishment of the restricted area , the place had up to 6,000 inhabitants, after the opening of the restricted area the number of inhabitants temporarily fell to below 200, today it has stabilized at around 200. Woomera has been open to the public since the official lifting of the restricted area, but individual systems are still in operation today. The main source of income today is tourism after activities in the WPA declined. Most tourists come to see the WPA facilities .

Woomera is located on the Stuart Highway , which runs from Port Augusta to Darwin in northern Australia.

The name of the place comes from the Aboriginal weapon of the same name ( Woomera ), a javelin with a throwing device similar to the American Atlatl .
