Zilla Huma Usman

Zilla Huma Usman (born September 16, 1971 , † February 20, 2007 in Gujranwala ) was a Pakistani politician and women's rights activist .

Zilla Huma Usman graduated from the University of the Punjab in Lahore with a degree in Political Science in 1998. In 2002 she was elected to parliament as a member of the Muslim League . Between 2003 and 2006 she was State Secretary until she was appointed Minister for Social Affairs in December 2006 . By virtue of her office, she primarily focused on combating violence against women.

In April 2005 Zilla Huma Usman initiated a mini marathon in Gujranwala, in which women should also run. The event sparked riot in the city sparked by activists trying to prevent the run.

On February 20, 2007, Zilla Huma Usman was shot dead in Gujranwala where she was going to give a speech. The assassin , Mohammed Sarwar, was reportedly motivated by her refusal to adhere to the Islamic dress code and a reluctance to involve women in political affairs. Like many women in Pakistan, Zilla Huma Usman wore a Shalwar Kameez , but without a scarf covering her hair .

Zilla Huma Usman was married and had two sons.

On March 20, 2007, Mohammed Sarwar was sentenced to death .
