Thomas Schmitz (organist)

Thomas Schmitz (* 1971 in Cologne ) is a German organist .

Life

Schmitz was initially a student of cathedral organist Andreas Meisner in Altenberg . After graduating from the Städtisches Hölderlin-Gymnasium in Cologne in 1990, he studied church music at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart, studying organ with Ludger Lohmann and improvisation with Willibald Bezler . Schmitz then took an artistic postgraduate course for the harpsichord with Jon Laukvik . Master classes with Michael Radulescu , Daniel Roth , Ewald Kooiman , Marie-Claire Alain , Robert Hill , Jean Boyer and others followed, which complemented the training.

In addition to his concert activities as an organist at home and abroad, Schmitz is in demand as a chamber music partner. CD recordings are available for some concerts, including works by Bach , Liszt , Dupré ( Symphonie-Passion ), Brahms and Karg-Elert . A special focus of his concert activities is improvisation. Schmitz has been performing church music in Cologne, Oppenweiler and Nürtingen since 1990 .

From 2000 to 2003 Thomas Schmitz was dean church musician in Freudenstadt (Black Forest), where he took on a teaching position as part of the diocesan church music education.

Schmitz has been the cathedral organist at the High Cathedral in Münster in Westphalia since February 2003 and has been teaching at the Münster University of Music since 2011 .
